  2. TNM Tis (Tumor or carcinoma in situ) 
  3. This is a very early cancer that has not spread below the limiting membrane of the first layer of colon tissue (mucosa).

  5. Standard Treatment  Treatment may be local excision of the tumor or polyp or a "wedge resection" involving the removal of a portion of the colon. Standard surgery, however, involves removing the tumor along with at least a 5 cm (2 in.) margin of normal
  6. colon on either side of the tumor site,
  7. and the nearby lymph nodes and veins.
  8. Because of the way blood is supplied
  9. to the colon, it is necessary to remove
  10. either the entire right side or the entire
  11. left side of the colon. This decreases
  12. the chance for local recurrence and
  13. increases the safety of the operation.
